Is Phuket Safe for Children?

Q: I would like to know if it is safe to travel with kids to Phuket? I have a child aged 4 years old and one 5 month old. Do they need to be immunized for something? Where is the best place to stay with kids? And things to do? - Lucy

A: It is perfectly safe to travel with children to Phuket - it is a popular destination for families from around the globe. The tourism industry is geared up for children and you will have no problems keeping them entertained. Babysitters are available in most hotels and there are kids clubs in some resorts. You do not need any special immunisation to visit Phuket. However, you should ensure that your family is fully covered by health insurance in case of unforeseen mishaps. There are excellent international hospitals on the island and the hundreds of pharmacies (including the Boots chain) for all medicines. When it comes to deciding where to stay, I guess it depends on where you can find a good offer and whether you are looking for a quiet beach resort or a fun resort with plenty of shopping and entertainment. All the resorts areas cater for children, but it may be best to skip Patong Beach, which has a particularly wild nightlife and is very busy. Kata and Karon beaches are generally favoured by families. The big resorts, like Club Med and Centara and Laguna hotels, have the best facilities, but even the cheaper resorts will cater for children. The beach will be the major attraction and you can hire umbrellas and beach loungers by the day. Trips that may appeal to you include an elephant ride, a snorkelling trip to the Phi Phi Islands and a boat ride to James Bond Island. One word of warning: think carefully before you rent a jetski on any of the beaches, as they have a reputation for ripping off holidaymakers. Other than that, you are bound to have a wonderful time. I've got young children and personally I'd rather stay at home and go camping in Wales. Not because I've got anything against Phuket, just don't fancy the long plane journey with the kids.
