Having Fun in Malawi

Q: I will be spending a week in Lilongwe, Malawi in December. Can you please recommend some fun family activities as well as good restaurants around town? - Ida

A: Although Blantyre is the economic capital and the busiest city in Malawi, Lilongwe is the official capital. One of the most popular attractions in the city is the Lilongwe Wildlife Centre, which is the country's only wildlife sanctuary. Besides getting to meet the animals, you can also walk one of the many wilderness trails set out in the sanctuary. Another great spot to get a feel for nature and the country's birdlife is the Dzalanyama Forest Reserve, which is located west of Lilongwe. For a fascinating insight into the country's inhabitants from centuries past, head for the Chongoni Rock Art Area – a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is located to the south east of the city and is the densest cluster of stone age rock art found in central Africa. The city's residents often head for the lake over weekends. Senga Bay, located around 120kms from Lilongwe, is the most popular destination for families and great for swimming, boating and relaxing. Tobacco is important to the Malawian economy and you can visit the tobacco auction floors in Lilongwe. There is a public gallery overlooking the sales floors and this is a great way to see this industry at work. When it comes to restaurants and nightspots, its best to ask around when you are there for the latest "in" places. Restaurants rated highly by Lonely Planet include Don Brioni's Bistro for Italian food, Annie's Coffee Shop for tasty breakfasts and bistro-style cuisine, the terrace of Buchannan's Grill for steaks and meat dishes, Green Bamboo Garden for Chinese food and Mamma Mia for the tasty Lake Malawi chambo fish.
