Q: We are a family of four adults travelling to Sydney. Please advise us on suitable budget accommodation in Sydney during the last week of December 2011. We would like to book on the Internet, but need advice on where to look. - Eileen Bhoodram
A: As you will know, Sydney is one of the premier New Year party cities in the world and the firework display over the harbour attracts tourists from around the globe. So, bear in mind that you are searching for accommodation at a peak time and prices will be high. I think you should try to find bed and breakfast, guesthouse or self-catering accommodation. A google search should find a number of options. Under bed and breakfasts, I tried the www.airbnb.com website. There I found a four-sleeper apartment for 96 Australian dollars (R687) per night - at under 25 dollars (R179) per person per night that is fair value. Another one I tried was www.bedandbreakfastnsw.com.au. On the website www.needitnow.com.au I found a family room for four people with an en-suite bathroom, kitchenette and balcony. Located in Challis Lodge in Potts Point, the room rate is 145 Aus dollars (R1,038) per night. You will find a number of self-catering apartments on the www.accommodationsydney.com.au website. One that caught my eye was a two-bedroomed apartment in Bay Street, Rockdale. Located within walking distance of shops and the beach. it is available for 159 Aus dollars (R1,139) per night. When booking a room or apartment, I recommend you exchange emails or telephone the agent or landlord before you send any money. At the very least, you need to try to ensure that it exists. Look for reviews from other customers by googling the apartment address or listed name. (26/6/11)
