Q: I have been shocked at the cost of accommodation in Berlin and am now looking to stay in a hostel when I visit in November. Is there a group I should join and how do I find out what is available? - Sheree Fields
A: You do not need to join any organization, unless you can get a substantial discount at a hostel you have chosen by joining one they are associated with. The easiest way to find a good hostel is to check out internet websites. You will soon discover that you have a huge choice of hostels to choose from in Berlin, with prices depending on location and facilities. However, they remain affordable, with the average price of around 10 Euros per night. Two of the best websites are www.hostelworld.com and www.hostelbookers.com. One of the hostels that caught my eye was the Plus Berlin hostel, which is located in the Friedrichshain area, which is packed with arty cafes, bars and small shops. The hostel also has a restaurant and swimming pool. Bed rates in November range from R134 to R234 per night (www.plushostels.com). I also liked the idea of staying in a houseboat hostel. The Eastern Comfort is moored on the "east" side of the Spree River, with first and second class en-suite cabins. They all have large windows or portholes with great views. Prices range from R155 to R350 per person (www.eastern-comfort.com). (14/8/11)
