Q: We are considering a package holiday to Phuket in Thailand during July. There are some great specials, which makes me wonder what the weather is like at this time of the year. What is your advice? - Liz Barrows
A: July falls in the low season, the so-called monsoon months, but it is not a bad time to visit Phuket. The low season stretches from May to October, which is considered the hot and rainy season. However, the temperature on the island does not really vary much, it usually peaks at 31-33 degrees Celsius. The difference is in the humidity, which is higher in summer (the low season). It rains, but seldom for extended periods. Usually there will be a 30-minute shower in the afternoon and maybe an hour or so at night. The sea is also different from peak season, when it is as flat as a pancake and crystal clear. In July there are waves and they can whip up the sand, but it is still clear by SA standards. As an expert on Phuket, I think the biggest difference between the two seasons is the cost of things. Hotel rooms can be 100-300% cheaper during the low season. This has less to do with the weather than the demand from European travellers who stay closer to home during summer. Overall, my advice would be to go for it. There are excellent packages at the moment and Phuket is a wonderful destination. (21 June 2009)
