Q: I have been offered the opportunity to go to Rio de Janeiro in October. I have been told that the weather is not great then and the beach scene has not hotted up yet. Do you recommend going or waiting until December? Any other advice would be great. - Sean Lancaster
A: The temperature in October ranges from 20-25 degrees Celsius and is considered the start of the warmer season. The beaches are not as busy as during the peak December season, but Rio's beaches are never quiet. There will certainly be enough action on and around the beaches to enjoy. While the weather is better in December and the holiday atmosphere intoxicating, the bonus of visiting Rio in October is that the accommodation is much cheaper and the laid-back atmosphere means you probably get to meet more of the locals than in the peak season. Whatever you decide, try to stay in Ipanema or Leblon rather than Copacabana. You should also try to visit Buzios up the coast for its lovely beaches and holiday atmosphere. (26 July 2009)
