Rent a Campervan in NZ

Q: We would like to hire a camper van in New Zealand for two to three weeks in November to explore the country. Could you give us an idea of the cost and conditions of hiring a van accommodating three adults? Does one need a special driver's licence? Would there be any problem taking the vehicle from the north to south island by ferry? Any other suggestions would be welcomed. - Rennie Els

A: There is a big choice of companies and vehicles available in New Zealand. You can find a listing and price guide on the www.kiwitravelnzrentals.co.nz website. For example, a four-sleeper motorhome with shower and toilet from Alpha Campers costs from 204NZD (R1100) per day, while a luxury van from Apollo costs up to 320NZD (R1730) per day. The average cost of camping sites ranges from 14-17NZD (R75-R90) per day, with children half price. All drivers must be at least 21 years of age and hold a valid driver's licence. An ordinary car licence will be sufficient - you do not need a heavy-duty licence.
Drivers from non-English countries need an international permit or translation of their licence. There would not be a problem taking the camper van on the ferry. The cost is 213NZD (R1152) plus 68NZD (R365) per adult and 44NZD (R237) per child. Most companies will expect you to put down a deposit or guarantee, usually around 5000NZD. (18 July 2010)
