Q: I understand that the drive between Los Angeles and Las Vegas features some great scenery. Could you tell me how far it is, how long it takes and where I should stay over if need be? - Kim Burroughs
A: Driving between the two cities is certainly more exciting that the short flight and the route through the vast expanse of the Mojave Desert can be awe-inspiring. The distance along the Interstate-15 is around 440 kilometres (275 miles) and the journey should take you 4-5 hours. Do not travel over a public holiday, when the route will be very congested, or a Friday, when the highway is packed with weekend gamblers. There is no reason to stay over on the drive, but, to break the journey, you could visit the desert town of Baker, which is the gateway to the so-called Death Valley. If you are driving a hired vehicle, ensure that the car rental firm know that you will be crossing a state line. (14 June 2009)
