Guided Walks in Washington

Q: My daughter and I will be in Washington in late September and would like to know if there are any guided walks of some of the city sights. Our first priority would be a tour of the important monuments and buildings. We are looking at something similar to the London Walks, which we enjoyed tremendously two years ago. Not only did we find it to be a good way to see the city, but it's also a great way to meet like-minded travellers. Can you help? - Rachel Bern

A: Washington Walks (tel: 202-484-1565) has a great selection of guided walking tours of the capital city. The one that would most interest you is called "Memorials by Moonlight". It visits all the city's famous memorials, the Jefferson Memorial, the Roosevelt Memorial, the Korean War Veterans Memorial, the Lincoln Memorial, the Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial, and the World War II Memorial. Your guide will tell you interesting tales and the story behind each of the memorials. As you walk, the lights come up along the tree-lined reflecting pool. The tour runs until October and costs 15 dollars per person. You can get further details on the www.washingtonwalks.com website. Other walks offered include a visit to Washington's most famous neighborhood, Georgetown, known for its shopping, dining and night life, and a tour of the US Capitol and the other buildings housing America's legislative and judicial branches of government.
