Datca Painisula in Turkey

Q: Friends have recommended that we visit the Datca Peninsula during our stay in Turkey during September and October. Do you have any advice about this destination? Will the weather still be okay? Can you recommend the best way to get from Istanbul or Bodrum and a nice place to stay? - James Ackermann

A: The Datca Peninsula is regarded as one of the most beautiful, unspoilt corners of Turkey, featuring remote beaches, historic ruins, olive groves and traditional Turkish cafes. For those seeking a quiet break in a historically interesting destination, this area certainly fits the bill. You can even take a daytrip by boat to the nearby Greek island of Symi. The weather should be fine, as winter only really sets in during November. Although you can drive the winding road from Bodrum, the easiest way to get there is by ferry from Bodrum, which take two and a half hours. The best place to stay is the Mehmet Ali Aga Konagi, a beautifully restored residence. A family-run hotel, it features magnificent wooden ceilings, wooden window shutters and arched stone fireplaces modern bathrooms and facilities (www.kocaev). However, it will cost you around 200 euros per room. For cheaper, clean accommodation try the Deniz Hotel at around 40 Euros per room or the Resort Datca from 33 Euros per room. Book these hotels on the www.marmaris-datca.travel website. (30 Aug 2009)
