Q: I would like to exchange two weeks in my house in Cape Town for two weeks in an apartment in London over the Christmas holidays. I am sure a couple or family in the UK would be happy with this arrangement, but I don't have a clue about how to go about organising it. A: There are a number of Internet-based home exchange organisations. Most require that you pay a membership fee, so you will have to decide whether it is worth it to you. Among the websites you can try are www.homelinksouthafrica.com, www.homeexchange,com and www.holswap.com. An alternative is to advertise your apartment in the classified section of a British newspaper, but this could end up costing you more.

A suggestion for John to increase his chances of finding a home swap in London over Christmas:
Rather than advertise in a UK newspaper (likely to be expensive and not reach many potential exchange partners), join a London based home exchange agency. Our agency, Home Base Holidays, has been operating a service in London since 1985 and we have many attractive exchange offers throughout the city. I'm sure that John will find much interest in his house in Cape Town but, as it can take a little time to arrange an exchange (you will want to get to know your exchange partners through regular correspondence so you'll feel happy to entrust your home to them), my advice is to list your home as soon as possible to arrange an exchange over Christmas.
