Which Greek island?

QUESTION: My husband and I would like to visit the Greek Islands (or some of them). What would be the best way to do this, and which islands do you choose? What time of the year is the best (not too hot). Any suggestions? - Annie Swarts

ANSWER: If you want to experience a "picture postcard" Greek island, with white-washed villas, bustling pavement cafes and splendid views, then you need to head for one of the Cyclades islands. Unsurprisingly, these are also the most popular and include the spectacular Santorini and Mykonos. The ideal trip
would be to visit a few of these islands, easily reachable by ferry.

Santorini is the queen of the islands, with its cliffside villages and unbeatable sunset views. With excellent beaches, great scenery and beautiful hotels, it is a must for any visitor. Most tourists want to stay in a room on the edge of the massive cliff, but you'll find far better value only a few metres back.

For some of the best nightlife in Europe, nothing beats decadent, exciting, gay-friendly Mykonos. You don't come here to escape or relax, but to party and
people-watch. Cosmopolitan and trendy, it is definitely worth a visit, if only for a hectic day or two.

A quieter option is Paros, which has the added advantage of being a major hub in the Greek ferry system. With its picturesque port and relaxed vibe, it makes the perfect base for a holiday. The ferry trip is about six hours from Athens and continues on to Santorini, with several daily connections to Mykonos.

Paros also connects with Naxos, my favourite island. Less touristy than the others, but just as enchanting and home to some of the best beaches in Greece. Stay at Plaka or Agia Anna in one of countless small inns and guest houses to experience the charm, village atmosphere and slow pace of life. You can take daytrips to the harbour town and the fishing village of Apollon.

If you want to avoid the hottest weather (and the Greeks who pack the islands for their summer holiday), the best time to visit is before the high season (May,
June) or afterwards (September, October).
