QUESTION: I am fascinated by the Owl House and the story of Helen Martins and would like to spend a few days at Nieu-Bethesda. Could you please recommend any self-catering or bed and breakfast accommodation in
the area. - Daphne Gouws
ANSWER: Your fascination with 'Miss Helen' is shared by many and a mini-tourist industry has sprung up around this extraordinary house. At last count there were 16 guest houses in the area. One of the most popular is the Murrayfield Guest House, which is owned by the author of a book on the Owl House, Anne Graaff. Stay in a lovely Victorian-style home, a garden cottage or a loft, all set in a pretty garden with a dam and orchard. (Tel: 049-841 1693) You could also try Doornberg Guest Farm, which is situated just outside the village. It offers accommodation in a guest house, a flat, a rondavel or an enchanting stone cottage overlooking a small dam. Located on a sheep farm, the Van Heerden family are great hosts. (Tel: 049-841 1401) In the village you can stay in House Number One, a restored Victorian-style home with yellow wood floors and all the home comforts, including a snooker table. (Tel: 049-841 1700). A nice bed and breakfast option is Outsiders, which offers cosy rooms in a restored Karoo-style home. Enjoy meals at the adjoining restaurant. (Tel: 049-841 1642) If you prefer a little privacy in a self-catering cottage on the outskirts of the town, then try Rustpunt. There are great mountain views from its spacious verandah.
