QUESTION: British friends of ours have heard of a cave in the Cape you can rent for a holiday or a weekend. They are very keen to undertake this adventure with us, but I have no idea of such a place. Can you assist? Would we need to bring our own bedding, heating, etc?- Claire Ryan
ANSWER: Yes, the most well-known cave accommodation is probably the Makkedaat Cave in the Baviaanskloof. It is located on a farm 50 kilometres from Willowmore in the Eastern Cape. This natural cave has been enclosed with timber and rock. It sleeps 10 people and has running water, a flush toilet and a kitchen with gas stove and sink. Most cooking, however, is done at a braai place outside the cave. Lighting is provided by paraffin lamps and candles. Meals can be arranged, but you need to bring your own bedding. If the cave is not available, the same farm rents out accommodation under overhanging rocks, one of which is fitted with a flush toilet and shower. Accommodation in the cave and overhang lodge is very basic and not for those who expect hotel-style accommodation. (Booking and information, telephone: 044-923 1921). A more luxurious option would be one of the "cave rooms" the Kagga Kamma Game Reserve in the Swartruggens region, 250 kilometres from Cape Town. This four-star camp has 10 rooms built into caves, They have electricity, full bathrooms and even tea and coffee-making facilities. (Telephone: 021-872 4343).
