A most unusual holiday

QUESTION: If I wanted an unusual holiday, have you any idea how I would get to Tristan da Cunha, how long it would take to get there (and back).. and does one travel there only by boat or does the island have enough space for a landing strip? - DA Jones

ANSWER: The remote location of Tristan da Cunha makes it very difficult to visit. There is no airport, and the islands can only be reached by boat. Although cruise ships occasionally pay a visit, the easiest way is to get a berth on a fishing boat from Cape Town for the six-day voyage. However, schedules for 2008 have been disrupted by the destruction of the island's fish processing factory by a fire earlier this year. South Africa's polar research vessel, the SA Agulhas provides a cargo and passenger service to Tristan da Cunha each spring, normally in September. This voyage gives passengers an opportunity to have a stay of up to three weeks on Tristan, making it a very popular, and busy trip for visitors. If you manage to secure a berth on a ship, accommodation is available in homestays and three guest houses. For further information, check the www.tristandc.com website.
