Cheaper transfer from JFK

QUESTION: Our hotel in Manhattan, New York has quoted my wife and I $120 for an airport transfer (per car) from JFK Airport to the hotel. Is there other more affordable, yet convenient, transport available from the airport to Manhatten? - John Birch

ANSWER: One of the best bets is to take a taxi, which will take as long as a hotel limousine for the trip. Most taxis at JFK charge a $45 flat fare (plus tolls of around $9) to any Manhattan hotel. The taxis are available outside every terminal and they are easy to locate. This fare is for the car (maximum: four passengers) and there is no additional charge for luggage. Alternatively, you could take the Super Shuttle, a door-to-door minibus service which will drop you outside your hotel. The fare ranges from $15-$19 per person. No reservations are required. Just make your way to the Super Shuttle departure point for this 24-hour service. If you decide to opt for one of the airport limousine services, be aware that the price quoted could exclude additional costs such as tolls, airport parking, 7% tax, 8% fuel surcharge and a 10% gratuity. These costs may not be fully disclosed upfront, but could add a substantial amount to your final bill.
